Jeff Smith - Bone
With news of my upcoming son, I wanted to gather some great books for bedtime reading. I picked up a lot of classic children's stories, but I wanted something that leaned more towards comics when he got older. I came across the color hardcover Bone books at Costco and knew I had to own it. The story and art are all done by Jeff Smith, and the title has been lauded as one of the best single artist/writer books to come out.
I had heard a lot about Jeff Smith's epic saga, but really had no reason to dip into comics geared towards kids. I had originally planned to leave the book on the shelf for a few years until my son got older, but my wife read the books and really enjoyed them. The book managed to surprise me with the quality of the story/art, even after reading the nothing but glowing reviews. The epic journey had an unexpected level of depth for a kid's book, and I'm not surprised it got picked up by Scholastic.
