Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy
For a person that posts about music every week and a half, I actually started getting into music pretty late, and interesting music even later. I never hunted down artists or combed through CD’s, and instead opted for compilation CD’s. As a kid, I would play the CD's on repeat, rehashing the heavily rotated overplayed songs of the past year. If you’re from Canada, you may well be aware of the Now! series of CD’s (which apparently is still going). It was on Now! 3, the third and only Now! CD I’ve ever owned, that I played Sex and Candy along with other great tracks of the day.
I loved this song. To me, it's a 'one-hit-wonder' that never felt like one. I never owned an Our Lady Peace CD or played Oasis into the early morning. I was an uncool, nerdy, video game nerd and this song helped introduce me to music that wasn't on a film or video game soundtrack. The song has a low tempo and grunge-style chord progression that hit me at an age before angst. The result is a song that is dripping in 90s, and always drowns me in wonderful nostalgia. Also, I highly suggest you click on those links as I will surely be posting on some of those tracks later.
