Eagle Eye Cherry - Save Tonight
Another 90s fan-favourite, today’s post will be sure to dig up long lost memories. As mentioned in a previous post, I would play a lot of guitar back in University. I was one of the last to pick up the guitar in my group, and they were far better at it than I ever was. It was in one of our jam circles that my friend started strumming the iconic chords for ‘Save Tonight’ by Eagle Eye Cherry. We were all instantly assaulted by nostalgia.
Written and performed by Swedish rock musician, Eagle Eye Cherry, 'Save Tonight' is the hit single off of his first album 'Desireless'. Cherry has made three other albums since then, the last released in 2012 named 'Can't Get Enough'.
‘Save Tonight’ is one of those songs that had an incredible amount of appeal for my generation, yet doesn’t get discussed much. Now, I could be completely wrong about that last statement, but it really is how I feel. Classic songs like ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Time of Your Life’ get referenced all of the time, but whenever ‘Save Tonight’ shows up on a playlist people universally tell me how long it has been since they’ve heard it.
The song itself is sweet and romantic without being too sappy. A memorable chord progression mixed with a catchy chorus allow this song to hold up incredibly well and hearkens back to when radio wasn’t dominated by electronica. As I hear the song, I think back to when my friends and I would strum our nights away eating barbequed meat and sipping beers.
