Cheesebun - Fettuccine Alfredo Zine
Special post for you all today!
The Ottawa local zine-scene is a small sub-culture that has some pretty die-hard fans. Zines have gotten enough foothold to have an Annual Zine Off for the 4th year. Now, I should preface by saying I never fell into zine culture. I respect the creative freedom and indie spirit, but I've found that there are too many people who take the DIY mentality and use it as an excuse for laziness.
I hope to change my mind on zines this year and it all sprang from 'Fettuccine Alfredo'. Full disclosure, I am written about on in it, but I feel that's what it had to take to even have me look at a zine. What struck me was the quality of the zine, which trumped any of the muddy crap-scanned zines I've skimmed through before. The light colours and solid patterns compliment the hand-drawn doodles and cut outs to give a feeling of punk-rock Pinterest. Everything from the Ottawa-centric writing down to the stiff paper used makes this zine scream quality without losing its DIY roots.
An added bonus to the animal lovers out there is that all funds generated from 'Fettuccine Alfredo' will go to the Sit With Me Dog Rescue. And why is it called 'Fettuccine Alfredo'? It's based off of a Mitch Hedberg quote"Fettuccine alfredo is macaroni and cheese for adults". What's not to love here?
