The Ting Tings - Shut Up and Let Me Go
Just today I was at work and dozing after a late night of gaming. Strung out on 3 hours of heart-wrenching NPR, I needed an audio pick-me-up. I dug into my player and landed on 'We Started Nothing', the debut album from The Ting Tings. I had forgotten just how great this band was, and knew that I had to blog about it right away.
For those who had forgotten, The Ting Tings are a British duo that came out in the late aughts. Both do their fair share of playing, with Jules De Martino taking up the drums and Katie White on the vocals. People will remember their big singles, 'Shut Up and Let Me Go' and 'That's Not My Name', but the album is really solid as a whole. Songs like 'Great DJ' and 'Fruit Machine' were lost in the shuffle, but are as good as their big hits. In the end, I chose the title song based off of the trippy and slightly awkward video.
I think it's a shame that this band hasn't had a revival. They have recently released their third studio album, Super Critical, but it didn't make a splash. Their sound often involves funk guitar riffs over 80s pop music that is pretty defining. To top it all off, White has a great bubblegum punk voice that gives the pop-heavy tracks a bit of edge.
Plus, it's always great to see female guitarists take center stage.
