Meaghan Smith - If You Asked Me
A couple of years ago, my wife went on a music bend and started discovering new artists. We generally have different tastes in music, but she has always been a lover of sultry femmes from a bygone era. I did some swing dancing in university, so I was more than happy to discover new music with none of the legwork.
One day she came to me with a single by Canadian singer Meaghan Smith. I thought the song was great so I went ahead and got her debut 2009 album ‘The Cricket’s Orchestra’. Probably the most swing-y of my wife’s choices, I easily found great songs like ‘Heartbroken’ and ‘Take Me Dancing’. My favourite of the album is ‘If You Asked Me’, a go-to song for a lot of my playlists. The song tells the story of a girl hopelessly in love with a terrible boyfriend, against her better judgement. The upbeat brass and syncopation brings a light happy tune that is a perfect homage to the swing era, and could have easily been passed as a number one hit over 80 years ago.
