Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
When I was in high school, my english teacher asked everyone to choose a song that they liked, interpret the lyrics, and do a class presentation on it. I didn't really know much about music at the time but I did like Jamiroquai's song 'Virtual Insanity'.
For those thinking back, Jamiroquai is remembered as the band with that one single and the dancing guy with big hats. I remember the band much more fondly, and still have a hit of nostalgia for their single 'Deeper Underground' from the ill-received 'Godzilla' movie of 1998. I also had a small revival with the band back in the mid 2000s when I found out that their single 'Canned Heat' was immortalized in the dance scene from Napoleon Dynamite.
Researching Jamiroquai now, it's kind of a wonder I haven't been following them for over a decade now. The band, led by the lead singer Jay Kay, blends and flows with different genres that can range from easy going lounge music to jazzy rock. The one thing that seems to keep their distinctive sound is a swinging funk beat that ties everything together. Unfortunately, it's this creativity and unique sound that has probably stopped Jamiroquai from being more accepted in the mainstream music scene. Jamiroquai is just plain weird, and I absolutely love it.
With 2 posts a week, it's hard to properly revisit all of my past loves properly. From the singles that I've heard when doing this post, however, I just might put in the time to go through some of their albums.
